Social Justice

UnitingCare Burnside has a clear commitment to social justice and achieving positive social change. One of the ways this commitment is expressed is through the work of Social Justice Unit.

Burnside aims to influence governments and other key decision makers in order to shape our society into a more just and safe place for all children, young people and families.

Burnside seeks to fulfil this aim through research, policy development and advocacy. All of the research at Burnside is done within the Research Code of Ethics. A real strength of Burnside's work in this area is that it is informed by the experience of direct service programs and service users.

Burnside is concerned about the impact of combined welfare to work policy changes and new industrial relations laws on sole parent families. The paper (in the documents box on this page) identifies the barriers faced by sole parent families on Centrelink benefits and highlights strategies that improve outcomes for parents and children while creating a policy environment that supports sustainable workforce participation.

Another aspect of our commitment to social justice at Burnside is that we intend our programs to be the best they can be for our service users. Our programs contribute to this by making available to staff the latest in practice and research knowledge and through the coordination of program evaluations.
